About Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area

Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area is situated in Yilan County, Taiwan, nestled within the Central Mountain Range. This forest area spans lush old-growth cypress forests and diverse montane ecosystems ranging from dense broadleaf to coniferous woodlands. The region’s elevation, which reaches around 1,950 meters, contributes to the area's cool, misty climate and abundant rainfall that supports the verdant environment. Historically, Taipingshan was an important logging area during the Japanese colonial period in the early 20th century, leaving a legacy of timber railways and forestry buildings now preserved as cultural heritage sites. Visitors can explore the scenic Jincui Trail, the historic forest railway tracks, and remnants of old logging camps. Key recreational opportunities include hiking through ancient giant cypress groves, cycling on mountain trails, and soaking in natural hot springs such as the famous Taipingshan Hot Spring. Wildlife enthusiasts may encounter rare bird species and endemic flora unique to Taiwan's high mountain habitats. The area’s mix of natural beauty, cultural history, and well-maintained trails invites outdoor adventurers and nature lovers year-round, making it one of Taiwan's most treasured forest recreation spots.
